Whilst it looked almost identical to the 550 Maranello, the Ferrari 575M boasted substantial mechanical improvements. The V12 engine was enlarged to 5.7L with power and torque rising to 508 hp and 434 lb-ft respectively. Other changes included bigger brakes, refined aerodynamics, improved weight distribution and adaptive independent suspension which was controlled by the transmission, minimising pitch during shifts.
Two gearbox options were offered with a traditional 6-speed manual with a gated shifter, and a 6-speed ‘F1’ transmission that was an automated manual. It marked the first time the F1 gearbox was offered on a V12 Ferrari.
