Exclusive to the Japanese domestic market, the Forester STI II boasted more power, torque and sportier styling then the Forester the rest of the world got. Production consisted of a short October 2000 to December 2001 run with 703 examples made in total.
This version of the 5-door SUV was made in right-hand drive only and featured Subaru’s 2.0L turbocharged ‘Boxer’ engine. Peak power was rated at 246 hp with 228 lb-ft of torque, and was enough to power the Forester STI from 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds. The full-time all-wheel drive system made use of a viscous limited-slip centre differential, and the kerb weight was a relatively low 3,108 lbs.
