Sébastien Loeb was born in 1974 in Haguenau, in Alsace, and was a national-level gymnast before he ever drove competitively. He came to rallying late, in his early twenties, after answering a talent search, and was spotted by Citroën within a few years.
From 2004 to 2012, with Daniel Elena beside him in every car, he won the world championship nine years in a row for Citroën, in the Xsara, the C4 and the DS3. No driver in any major motor-sport championship had been so dominant for so long. He won eighty world championship rallies — still the record.
He retired from full-time rallying after his ninth title and went looking for other things to win. In 2013 he took a Peugeot 208 T16 — a purpose-built hill-climb car of close to 900 horsepower — to Pikes Peak in Colorado and set a record of 8 minutes 13.878 seconds, almost a minute and a half faster than anyone before him. The record stood for five years. The car is in this catalogue.
He has raced at Le Mans, finishing second in 2006, in touring cars, in rallycross and at the Dakar, where he has finished second several times.
In 2025 Sébastien Ogier, the driver who had been his teammate and rival at Citroën, equalled his nine world titles. Loeb still competes part-time, and has never seemed short of something new to try.
