Adrian Newey

Adrian Newey was born in 1958 in Colchester, Essex, and studied aeronautics and astronautics at the University of Southampton. He started at the Fittipaldi Formula One team and made his name at March, where his IndyCar designs won the Indianapolis 500.
In Formula One, his cars have been winning for more than three decades. At Williams in the early 1990s he designed the cars with which Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve won their titles. At McLaren, Mika Häkkinen won twice in his cars. At Red Bull, from 2006, he turned a new team into champions: Sebastian Vettel won four titles in a row, and later Max Verstappen four more.
His designs have won fourteen drivers’ titles, twelve constructors’ titles and more than two hundred Grands Prix. He still works at a drawing board with pencil and paper rather than on a computer screen.
His career also carries its darkest day. Ayrton Senna was killed at Imola in 1994 in a Williams he had designed. Newey and others were prosecuted in Italy over the accident and acquitted; he has written about it at length, and about how it has stayed with him.
The Aston Martin Valkyrie in this catalogue is his road car, developed with Red Bull. In 2026 he became team principal, technical director and co-owner of the Aston Martin Formula One team.
